Fall foliage in the mountains tends to peak around Columbus Day weekend, but that’s not the end of the season. The color shifts north and follows the water, and the Champlain Islands often hit their own peak just as the mountains start to fade.

Travel and Leisure recently forecasted a long and spectacular foliage season for New England this year, which means there’s still plenty of color ahead for anyone willing to look toward the lake instead of the hills.
